A Study on the Correlation among Hospital Stress, Health Locus of Control, and Coping Method of Hospitalized Patients¢¥ Family

Abstract
The modern nursing theory has developed from the patient-centered into the family-centered theory; therefore, as clients of comprehensive nursing, the family unit has been emphasized.
Illness and hospitalization for physical or emotional problems have an impact not only on the client but on the other family members. It is a crisis which can produce dysfunction thus further disorganizing the client and family.
At the situation of crisis, the other family members as well as the client come to perceive stress, and environmental resources and their own coping method are necessary to maintain their physical or emotional equilibrium.
The purposes of this study were as follows:
(1) To explore the stressor characteristics, the methods of coping with stress and the locus of control in personality of hospitalized patients¢¥ family(H. P. F. ).
(2) To analyze the correlation between stress and locus of control in personality, between coping method and locus of control, and between stress and coping method.
(3) To propose the strategies of inclusive and comprehensive nursing intervention for family mental health.
The subjects of this study were 114 family members randomly selected from Medical, Surgical, OBGY., and Neurosurgical wards at Chun-Buk National University Hospital in Chonju.
Data was collected from August 30, to September 7, 1985, by the questionnaire method. A formalized questionnaire consisting of 107 items was used in the survey.
The instruments for this study were the Hospital Stress Rating Scale (HSRS) developed by the researcher, based on Volicer¡¯s HSRS, Health Locus of Control Scale developed by Waliston, et. al. and Coping Method Scale developed by Choi¢¥s questionnaire, based on Bell, Jallowiec & Powers¢¥ Coping Method Scale. A pretest was conducted on the questionnaire items for the reliability.
The results gathered were analyzed by means of statistical methods such as t-test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. Average total hospital stress score of HPE was 138.41. Hospital stress factors were classified into seven, and their order of getting score was: family problems (27.05), unfamiliarity surroundings (24. 73), interpersonal relationship and communication (23. 47), nursing care and treatment (22. 25), lack of information (20.00), patient¢¥s illness(14.14), and financial problems(6.76).
2. Their average health locus of control was 33.13 which indicated internal locus of control.
3. The relationship between hospital stress and health locus of control showed no significance(p>.05).
4. HPF rated problem-oriented coping method significantly higher in degree of use than affective oriented coping method.
5. The relationship between coping method and health locus of control was negatively correlated(r=-.2331, p<.01).
6. The relationship between hospital street and coping method was positively correlated(r=.1851, p<.05).
